The Secret of Monkey Island is a 1990 point-and-click graphic adventure game developed and published by Lucasfilm Games. It takes place in a fantastic version of the Caribbean during the age of piracy. The player assumes the role of Guybrush Threepwood, a young man who dreams of becoming a pirate and explores fictional islands while solving puzzles. Playing the original Secret of Monkey Island for the first time remains one of my favorite retro gaming memories and the beginning of my solid love affair with the point and click genre. The first two games in the series, spearheaded by the legendary trio of Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman, and Tim Schafer, were absolute masterpieces. The secret of monkey island, play Guybrush Threepwood who wants to big a big time pirate. Governor Marley is kidnapped by the nefarious ghost of Le Chuck and its up to you to make the journey to Monkey Island and rescue him. If you've never played this before, then you really don't know what your missing.
Deep in the Caribbean lies Melee Island, ruled by the governor Elaine Marley. The cruel pirate LeChuck is deeply in love with her – so deeply that he refuses to accept his own death. As a ghost, he dwells with his undead crew somewhere near the mysterious Monkey Island. Meanwhile, a young fellow named Guybrush Threepwood is determined to become a real pirate. At the Scumm Bar he meets three pirates who tell him he has to complete three difficult tasks in order to be worthy of this title. But as Guybrush is trying to complete these tasks, he encounters the lovely governor, and this meeting changes his life forever. Risking to incur the wrath of LeChuck, Guybrush has to prove his wit is as sharp as his sword, and figure out a way to foil the ghost pirate’s plans.
The Secret of Monkey Island is an adventure game that utilizes the command verb-based SCUMM interface first introduced in Maniac Mansion: the player constructs commands for Guybrush by selecting an appropriate verb and then combining it with an object or an inventory item. Objects that can be interacted with are highlighted when the player places a cursor over them. The game is the first LucasArts adventure in which it is impossible to get irrevocably stuck; like in Loom, the player character also cannot die. The branching dialogue system, where the player chooses between several available responses during conversations, allows the player to talk to characters in different ways without fearing a wrong choice, and is often used as a humorous device.
The puzzles are predominantly inventory-based; most of the problems in the game are solved by picking up items and combining them with each other or with objects (or people) in the game world. Several tasks are dialogue-based; among those is the humorous “insult swordfighting”, which involves Guybrush learning and choosing witty insults while dueling pirates.

The Secret of Monkey Island was the first game in the Monkey Island series, and the fifth game to use the SCUMM scripting language. At first, the game follows Guybrush's attempts to prove himself a pirate; later, he attempts to rescue his new-found love, Elaine Marley, from the clutches of the ghost pirate LeChuck.
Versions
The Secret of Monkey Island was released in several different versions.
- The SCUMM V4 version (EGA DOS floppy)
- The SCUMM V5 versions (VGA DOS floppy, Amiga, Atari ST, FM-TOWNS, Macintosh, Sega/Mega CD, VGA DOS CD)
- The Special Edition version (based on the VGA DOS CD version with high-resolution assets laid over the original V5 script data).
The high-resolution data ('modern' mode) in the Special Edition is not supported by ScummVM. It is possible to extract the files of the V5 VGA DOS CD version ('classic' mode) and make them playable via ScummVM. The process is described in this thread. Do note that by using this method, only the classic mode is playable in ScummVM.

Boot Params
For more information on using boot params, see the Boot Params wiki page.
Some of the boot params listed in the following table only work in the CD/Mac version of Monkey Island (and not in 'monkeyega' and 'monkeyvga'). Those are marked with an asteriks (*) symbol (except for the cases we overlooked ;-).
In addition to the boot params listed below, you can use values greater than 900 to be teleported to specific rooms. To be precise, if you give the number x, then you get sent to room (x-700).
Furthermore, in the CD/Mac versions of Monkey (target 'monkey', not 'monkeyvga' or 'monkeyega), you can specify a boot param between 3000 and 3777 (including both numbers). It's currently not documented what those boot params do precisely.
Finally, boot params not covered by the list below will be interpreted as raw room numbers and cause the game to start in that room.
