Check compatibility
You can upgrade to OS X El Capitan from OS X Snow Leopard or later on any of the following Mac models. Your Mac also needs at least 2GB of memory and 8.8GB of available storage space.

Get connected
It takes time to download and install OS X, so make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. If you're using a Mac notebook computer, plug it into AC power.
Download OS X El Capitan
For the strongest security and latest features, find out whether you can upgrade to macOS Catalina, the latest version of macOS.
If you still need OS X El Capitan, use this link: Download OS X El Capitan. A file named InstallMacOSX.dmg will download to your Mac.
Install the macOS installer
Double-click the downloaded file to open a window showing its contents. Then double-click the file within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg.
Follow the onscreen instructions, which will guide you through the steps necessary to install.
Begin installation
After installation of the installer is complete, open the Applications folder on your Mac, then double-click the file named Install OS X El Capitan.
Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.

Ghostscript is needed by Scribus for two purposes, namely the print preview (File > Print Preview) and the rasterisation of EPS files in image frames. If you don't need one of those features, you can safely ignore the warning message displayed by Scribus in case Ghostscript isn't installed.
Contrary to some reports in the press, Ghostscript is not required for PDF or EPS export, since Scribus has its own code to handle this feature.

Generally speaking, you want to have the latest ghostscript you can find. You should find anything since 8.60 to be serviceable, but as of this writing the current version is 8.71. As far as we know, you cannot go wrong by potentially having some 'too far advanced' version of Ghostscript.
This is by far the most sensible way. Most of the 'mainstream' Linux distros will have Ghostscript in their repositories, so if you don't have it, simply search for it. If you don't know how to work with your repositories, you might as well forget about Ghostscript, since you have or are going to have far more important issues than that.
A particular advantage of the repository method is that once you install it, it will keep itself up to date.

The tar part means that the file was tarred, in which a number of files are collected together into one file. The other part, gz, xz, or bz2 means the file was then compressed to shrink its size.
About checksums: It's always a good idea to check the validity of anything like this that you download. If nothing else, there may have been an error occur, which leads to a failed compiling and wastes your time. Once you download your file, you can run a checksum on it, which makes a calculation on the contents of the file, then creates an alphanumeric sequence that should match whichever checksum corresponds to your file from the list. Again, you should have these in your system, either the sha1sum or md5sum utilities ends up with the corresponding result: sha1sum filename.tar.gz (for example) or md5sum filename.tar.gz should produce the sequence you see. If not, something went wrong with the download or the file has been tampered with. |
You must have the tar utility, almost certain with Linux whether you realize it or not. In a console of some sort type:
tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz
or
tar -Jxvf filename.tar.xz
or
tar -jxvf filename.tar.bz2
depending on which one you downloaded. The z or the J or the j option uncompresses the file so that then it can be extracted with the x option. The v and f options cause verbose output and indicate that what follows is a filename of the archive.
What you should now have is a directory named ghostscript-8.71. Now,
cd ghostscript-8.71 to enter the directory

We're going to assume that you have no interest in compiling on Windows, or that if you did you would not need instructions for the process.
If you go farther down the page, past the archived files, past the checksums, you will find links for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows versions. Simply download one of these and run it to install Ghostscript. If you do this before you install Scribus, chances are Scribus will find Ghostscript unless you choose a nonstandard location when Ghostscript was installed.
If it doesn't, go to File > Preferences > External Tools to browse for your Ghostscript (gs) executable. Remember to choose the gswin32c.exe or gswin64c.exe executable depending on your processor's version of Windows.

Ghostscript for Mac OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar)
- GPL Ghostscript 8.61 is an open-source PostScript interpreter that includes integrated support for the CUPS printing system in Mac OS X. It is the replacement for ESP Ghostscript.
- GPL Ghostscript is required for all users. It is not necessary to install Ghostscript more than once.
Please note: all packages require Mac OS X version 10.2 or newer.
Usage
Foomatic-RIP is an internal component of the Foomatic runtime printing system. It may be included with the Mac OS X driver package available for download from this website. Please check the Downloads section for the driver package you want. It should be listed as a separate download if it is not included with the driver package. If there is no Mac OS X package for the driver you need, you will have to download it separately.
To determine if your printer is supported, check the Printer Listing database for your manufacturer and model. If your printer model is listed in the database then the model description page will list the compatible free software printer drivers and the degree of compatibility (whether the printer works “perfectly”, “mostly”, “partially”, or is a “paperweight”).
In the case when more than one driver is compatible with a particular printer model, the recommended driver is listed first, with any remaining drivers listed in order of decreasing compatibility and performance.
In the case where no compatible printer driver is known to exist the model is classified as a “paperweight”. In this case, you will need to contact the printer model manufacturer for support.
Once you have identified a compatible driver, the next step is to determine the driver's “Execution style”. The execution style of a driver can be found on the driver description page (which is different from the driver home page or web page); click the name of the driver to go to its description page. Additionally, the execution style for every driver is listed parenthetically on the driver listing page.
If you see “Execution style: Filter” then the odds are high that you will need to use an existing package installer, such as for the hpijs driver, or, in the case that no such package exists, you will need to download the source for the driver and compile it yourself (although doing so might be considered an “advanced maneuver” for the typical Mac user). A third alternative would be to post a request for the driver to the Mac OS X forum, although this approach is not guaranteed to receive a timely response.

- Return to the driver listing page and download the appropriate PPD for your model. Select the appropriate printer from the popup list and click the “Generate PPD file” button to download the PPD file. Next,
- Locate the PPD file in your downloads directory and copy it into /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
- Finally, use Printer Setup Utility (or Print Center on Mac OS X Jaguar) to add a new printer queue to your system. Or, if your printer is directly connected to your Mac via the USB port then you may wish to install usbtb to simplify the setup procedure and improve your printing performance.
